Holy cow, somebody is putting the back issues of Paul Krassner's The Realist online!

Growing up in the grim fifties, the epoch of buzz cuts, tv dinners, and the don't-question-the military-industrial-complex, there were a few elements of absurdity that gave me hope that the world wasn't going to be as dull as I feared; Mad Magazine, Ernie Kovacs, Lenny Bruce, Mort Sahl, Bob and Ray, and most incredibly, Paul Krassner. The Realist was pretty punk, as far as magazine went, it was more of a 'zine than anything traditional, and probably not found in many "respectable" homes. It was one of the rare publications that discussed liberal politics, and walked a very thin line between serious journalism and satire of the news. Very punk, certainly a great influence on Jon Stewart. Take a look at some of these issues from over 40 years ago, and marvel at their outrageousness. Like all great political satire, it amuses, educates, and invites discussion. Thank heaverns for freedom of speech.

My two favorite pieces are both in issue #74, the incredible poster Krassner hired Wally Wood to create, which is the final word on all things Disney, and  perhaps the greatest political journalism hoax of all time, The Parts Left Out of the Kennedy Book (read the last few paragraphs and feel your jaw drop).

Congratulations to Ethan Persoff for doing this!
