Unusual "food" article in today's Neatorama: Twinkie Fun Facts.

There are 17 Hostess bakeries across the countries cranking out 500 million Twinkies every year. It takes 40,000 miles of plastic wrap a year to package them. At 150 Calorie a piece, all those Twinkies have the energy equivalent to nearly 51,500 barrels of crude oil.

Ah, if only it could be harnassed for peaceful purposes.

While perusing chocablog today, I had an intense choc craving that was driving me nuts. The problem is that quaffing a good chocolate bar loads me down with a significant amount of my daily fat/calorie quota.

Fortunately, I recently discovered the new dark chocolate dipped mints from Altoids. Two of these will relieve the jonesing, at a cost of only 15 calories and half a gram of fat. These are rapidly replacing wintergreen as my favorite Altoid (the mint of myriad uses).

My favorite cure for chococraving remains the dark chocolate Dove Bar. Even though they were bought out by Mars, they remain the gold standard of consumer ice cream treats to me. I visited a friend on the South Side of Chicago in 1987, and paid a pilgimage to the original Dove store. Damn good chocolcate. On the west coast, I'm a big fan of See's dark varieties. Amazingly good (I believe they use Guittard); I go nuts for maple walnut and dark molasses chips. Arrgh - just thinking of it is killing me. (in a good way)

I should also mention one of my clients, Allies Edibles. They have a limited line (so they can focus) of very high-quality classic confections, and just got a nice write-up in Savor California.

A few weeks ago I ordered an Exopat silicone baking mat.  I'd heard rave reviews, but was naturally suspicious that anything that looked like a slimy piece of rubber could help with baking.  I gave it a try, and was totally amazed.  Chocolate chip cookies came out perfect, didn't stick, and cleanup was a breeze. But that's not all.

Active Image In the secular religion of Americana, comfort food from earlier times in our lives take on a profound impact.  In 1994, I created a tribute page to Jim-Denny's lunch counter in Sacramento.  It has gone through a few changes since 1936, but still makes what arguably the best burgers in the world.  My web design skills have evolved a bit over the years to (no more trans fats or single-dot gifs for positioning), and I've left this up in all its frameset glory.

A tribute to the best burgers in the world!
