Kurt Vonnegut was one of the great American writers, and I will miss him. He was a lot like Mark Twain, using sly humor for subversion. He spoke against the futility of war when few were as brave as he, and people listened. The Grateful Dead named their publishing company after his wonderful invention "Ice Nine"; his book "Player Piano" commented on the bizarre mecnico-consumerist world of the future (which came sooner than we thought).  Thanks to all things good for giving us artists like Kurt; the purpose of the artist is to make us think, and he did an exemplary job.

In his words:

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you’ve got about a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies — "God damn it, you’ve got to be kind."
