The only surprise to me about Don Imus was how he got away with it for so long. It would be one thing if his audience was 14 year-old boys, who delight in his racist, mysoginist spiel. But he has a *huge* following, as does Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, and the rest of that vitriolic crowd. That translates into money and power, and has attracted top politicians and deep-pocket advertisers. They are the real whores. Of course they are dropping him like a hot potato now, but this doesn't explain why they have supported him for so many years. Just when I think Darwin was right about us evolving, stories like this remind me of how dull witted our species can appear at times.

I tend to ignore folks like Imus, and generally see commercial radio as irrelevant these days. But obviously somebody is paying attention, and likes what they are hearing. Lots of somebodies. Maybe this episode will make people question these merchants of hate. Yeah, right.

That vitriolic crowd?
written by Ampontan, April 17, 2007
I wouldn't say that Imus was part of that Limbaugh/Coulter "vitriolic crowd". Imus is part of the liberal "vitriolic crowd", which has a different cast of characters. Imus endorsed Kerry and Harold Ford, which L/C would never do. Why do you think so many Democrats and left-leaning journalists went on his program, and not the others?
Frank Rich of the NYT, who got so exercised over George Allen's macaca, is on Imus a lot.
It's just a different form of hypocricy.
