The abnormal fear of clowns. Abnormal? I don't think so, more like self-preservation.

A video I just saw of Laughing Sal from the old San Francisco Playland reminded me of how creepy clowns can be.

When I was about 5 or 6, my grandparents took me to the old Ocean Park in Santa Monica, where they still had the old boardwalk (it was the stock boardwalk for any number of Warner Brothers movies). They had a "Laughing Sal" over the entrance to the fun house. I was so terrified I nearly wet my pants, and insisted on walking on the far side of the boardwalk.

Still gives me the creeps.

My grandmother told me there used to also be a male version, and they were dressed like bride and groom. Brrrrrr!

They lad a great gun house, with rocking floors, spinning disks, and a barrel you had to walk through to get out, also a big barrel you got in and the bottom would fall out as it got to speed. Ah, the days before lawsuits and safety regulations! They were fun, Sal was creepy.
