 Former Vice President Al Gore has been endorsed for President — by
Mother Nature herself!
This, unfortunately, may be the last big scoop from the Weekly World
News ("the world's only reliable newspaper"), who brought us Bat Boy,
among other curious cultural sightings. They are closing after their
August 3rd issue.
I will miss this publication, though I rarely buy it (the last time, I
think, when they had a Grand Unification Principle cover featuring Hank
Williams, Elvis, and JFK).
The paper was started when the National Enquirer went to color, and
wanted to do something with their old press. They decided to create a
paper where everything was made up. Their readership took it as
seriously. There was a famous case where they ran a story about an 86
year old woman in North Carolina who gave birth to triplets. An 86 year
old woman in North Carolina with the name sued them. In court, the
publisher told the judge that "everyone knows we make everything up."
The last honest publisher; they had my great respect after that.
Waiting at the checkout stand will be slightly less colorful.
